IRIS
PROJECTS
>ISE has been involved in
projects with >The Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (IRIS)>. IRIS is a network of top Canadian researchers who
collaborate on projects that focus on the essential elements of an intelligent system -
the ability to perceive, reason and act. ISE has been involved in the following IRIS
projects:
Intelligent Tools for Diagnosis, Surgery and Measurement
of Resulting Patient Outcomes (SAL)
Core
Issues in Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environments and Communication (HAY)

RECENT
RESEARCH AWARDS
May, 2000:
ISE president Dr. James McFarlane
has been awarded the 2000 Joseph F. Engelberger
Award for Technological Development. The Engelberger Awards, the
robotics industry's most prestigious honor named after the "father of
robotics", recognize outstanding individuals from all over the world
for achievements in the field of robotics.

Dr. McFarlane was honored for his leadership and outstanding technical
contributions at ISE, especially the excellent work on developing
unmanned, teleoperated robots, control systems, manipulators, telemetry,
and user interface controls.
The award was presented to Dr. McFarlane by Joseph F. Engelberger and the
Robotic
Industries Association (RIA)
during the International
Symposium on Robotics, held May 14-17 in Montreal, Canada. October, 1999:
ISER Vice President James Ferguson and Simon
Fraser University's Dr.
John Bird have been awarded the 1999
Business and Education Partnership Award from the Science
Council of British Columbia (SCBC). Dr. Bird is the Director
of SFU's Underwater
Research Laboratory, which, together with ISER, have produced
products for the scientific research community, the military, and for the
commercial underwater survey industry. These include sonar,
positioning systems, and autonomous underwater vehicles.
The award was presented to Mr. Ferguson and Dr. Bird at the 1999 BC Science
and Technology Awards Dinner, which took place on October 18, 1999. May,
1999:
ISE & ISE Research are the
recipients of BC Advanced Systems Institute's (ASI) 1999
Technology Partnership Award for their outstanding collaborations with British Columbia
Universities. ISE/ISER was awarded "for the outstanding collaborations with
British Columbia Universities, which over the years, have helped the companies achieve
their technical and product goals. Interactions with BC universities have helped ISE and
ISER develop new technologies for underwater vehicles - and helped ISE develop new
technologies for terrestrial robots."
The award was presented to ISE on May 11, 1999 by Len Zapalowski, Chairman of the Board of
BCASI, and Brent J. Sauder, Executive Director of BCASI.
